The open-source strategy for Epi Info™ is similar to that of the well known MySQL. Just as MySQL has a free “Community Edition” and a for cost “Enterprise Edition”, Epi Info™ will have the “Open Community Edition” and a separate secured “CDC Edition” to meet the security requirements of State and Federal governments.
The Epi Info™ “Open Community Edition” would be developed and supported by the open-source community. The CDC would not bear responsibility for the integrity of this codebase nor provide help-desk support for it but rather allow the community to provide the support.
The Epi Info™ integration team at the CDC will iteratively integrate the open-source community’s contributions to Epi Info™ and process it through the rigorous C&A and QA process for use on the Federal and State government’s network. Additionally, the Epi Info™ integration team will add features unfamiliar to the open-source community that are specific to the CDC such as integration with PHIN VADs and PHINMS which would be supported by the Epi Info™ help-desk.
The Epi Info™ community of users and developers will have access to the entire codebase. Once the security requirements are met, Epi Info would then be publically accessible in a finished product much as it is today. Additionally, applications such as OMS, NETSS, PHIMMS, and RASP could then be “Powered by Epi Info™”, developed in weeks, and customized in minutes instead of years saving millions of dollars in software development.
